In an effort to establish herself as the new mistress of Manderley, Mrs. de Winter revives the mansion’s famous fancy-dress ball. But, encouraged by Mrs. Danvers to copy her dress from a portrait in the hall, she incurs Maxim’s wrath. Mrs. Danvers’ taunting reaches a climax as she declares Rebecca is still ruler at the house, just as the wreck of her former mistress’s boat is found.
